Sands of Time
My thoughts are stretching way across an open sea
A tiny rowing boat is there to carry me
My mind is flowing with the rhythm of the sea
A tiny rowing boat is there to carry me
If I fall…...
Then I can start .....   start once  again

A  never ending journey lies in front of me
There’s no beginning or an end for me to see
But I know…..in my mind
I can cross….. the Sands of Time

Moving through night
Moving through day
Passing through time…..moulded by love
Pulled by a life force greater than us
All the way…..across the Oceans of Time

I kept on looking way across an empty sea
I couldn’t see you though your face was clear to me
I couldn’t understand that all the time you’d been
Right inside my tiny boat….right inside of me
In my heart…..in my mind
As we cross. …..the Sand of Time

Moving though night
Moving through day
Passing through time….moulded by love
Pulled by a life force greater than us
Yours and mine……..across the oceans of Time

I never was without you.….I always knew your name
I lost you for a moment then I found you once again
Carry on …hand in hand....... till we find……the Sands of Time
Hand in hand…….way across……the Sands of Time

Behind the song

The song takes the theme of change and movement in the rhythm sea as a symbol for the constant changes in our thoughts and emotions. It was inspired by swimming in the Cornish seas. I love being in the sea and I used to swim across the bay of Pendower beach and look at the cliffs and the land from the sea. From this perspective it seem that being in the sea is being on firm footing and stable whereas the sensation is that the land is moving in the way we usually associate with the sea..The cliffs and beach seem to be gently tilting to and fro. This song conveys and reflects this feeling of regular movement and also the constant presence of a strong life force that accompanies us across this timeless journey. There is always ‘a tiny rowing boat’ to pick us up save us if we get lost on the way.

I also think of an old Breton Fisherman’s prayer when I sing this song. The fact that I used to look across to France when I swam in these seas is a kind of link too with this Breton prayer:

‘Dear God, be good to me. The sea is so wide, and my boat is so small’.

However the journey in this song is not one in a boat but is an inner journey of thoughts, emotions and feelings. And when my feelings are grounded and come down into the sea, there is always the tiny boat of love to pull me up. It sets me back on ‘the never ending journey that lies in front of me’.

The Sands of Time is sung by Annica Wejdmark, a Swedish singer from Stockholm. She trained in Sweden and has sung particularly in musicals at the Swedish Ballet Academy. I have been collaborating with Annica now since 2007 and she has sung in various concerts with me in Florence. Her voice can be heard on a number of songs she sings on the forthcoming EP ‘Heading for the Shore’ to be released in December 2009.
