A New Dawn

A New Dawn
A new dawn has begun
A new dawn of a new renaissance
An eve of a new woman

And shadows fall away
As light begins to play
In your soul at last

And all the dreams you held inside you
Deep within you …frozen…
Run free at last

Don’t let them fade away
Don’t let them fade way
Don’t let them fade away
A New Dawn has begun

Composing for films and ‘A New Dawn’
Many of my Florentine friends are students and musicians. However, I have a lot English, Irish and American friends who live and work as I do in this beautiful, historical and cultural city. One of these good friends is Elizabeth Monroy, the talented Director of the ‘New Renaissance Florence Film School’. Her incredible vision and determination inspired her to set up an international film school in the heart of Florence where she runs courses in filmmaking throughout the year.

I have been collaborating with Elizabeth and the ‘New Renaissance Florence Film School’ for a few years now. I have been involved in writing music and songs for soundtracks to the series of ‘short films’ produced by students of the school. This has been a fascinating experience for me and I have learnt a lot about the creative process of filmmaking and met a lot of interesting and talented people.

The most recent film ‘All One’ features as its soundtrack ‘An All Embracing Light’. Another very enjoyable project I worked on was the collaboration with two students at the New Renaissance Film School who produced a short film called "EVEolution". The two filmmakers were Nanette Del Carmen and Jamy Silver.
I have included material kindly given to me by Nanette about this film to give a brief outline of the project.

Synopsis of film
"EVEolution" is a short film written and directed by Nannette Del Carmen and Jamy Silver. It's about how "Eve" has been kept in the dark and in the shadows of men for centuries. Now is the time for "Eve" to step into the light and redefined herself as a woman, can she? And will she?’

The theme of the film
I asked Nanette for her explanation of the key themes of her EVEolution film and these are here words:

’This short film was made with the conviction that women are in fact facing a new era where they can make a huge impact on the world. Women have been kept in the dark for eons and it's time for them to redefine themselves and take charge. This short film artistically shows how women have worn masks that men have given them for centuries and how now in the 21st century women can decide for themselves which masks to put on, if any. It's a lot to capture in four minutes, but we hope that we were able to give you an idea and make you think of the new roles and possibilities that are out there for women. All you have to do is EVE-olve’

The creative process and the music to EVEolution
This was a very interesting collaboration, especially from a musical point of view. Towards the end of the making of the film a situation arose where time was running out at the editing stage. This meant that I didn’t actually get to see the movie in its final form before I wrote all the music!

I therefore had to rely on the ‘storyboard’ and the patient explanations of Nanette and Jamy to communicate the vision and message of the film. I had to be particularly imaginative and creative in finding a theme, idea and motif for the movie but despite the seeming limitations I think I produced a piece that reflected the spirit of the film.

The incidental piano music I wrote for this film is featured on the home page of this site. I also wrote a song ‘A New Dawn’ which was the main song for the film. I tried to capture the essence this film and the song gives a message of hope, a re-birth of confidence and a new vision.

Collaborating with the film school has been very influential in helping me to expand my own vision and think about writing music for other people and projects.

Both ‘EVEolution’ and ‘All One’ were short films featured at the Florence International Student Film festival held at the Odeon Cinehall, Florence on December 12 2008
